The Problem
We cannot manage an adaptive, living system with a fixed, industrial model.
In the 1980s, healthcare adopted an industrial model. Industrialization perfects parts and process to create efficiency. For many products and services, this can produce high efficiency in very complicated circumstances. The only requirement is that environment must be ordered and predictable. Unfortunately, healthcare is neither. Healthcare runs is an environment of both biologic and social Complexity. The fixed structures of industrialization stifle our capability to adapt. All living systems must adapt to thrive.
Adaptation must replace control as healthcare delivery’s fundamental capability.

Systems Thinking
System Thinking is a process based in system science that offers guidance and tools for innovators to ensure each system we design is matched with its environmental reality so it is best able to achieve its purpose. We use many interrelated systems to achieve health for society and for an individual. The Curandi Model applies Systems Thinking within healthcare that enables us to design for the reality of overlapping systems, subsystems, and inter-dependent social systems.
Purpose
Systems exist to achieve a purpose. Healthcare is no different. Purpose is the one stable point of reference as new circumstances and events emerge from healthcare’s complex environments. Curandi Model requires tangible and measurable purpose as the reference to guide system structure to meet the need of each patient within the resource limits of society.
Self-Organization
The healthcare environment is inherently biologically and socially complex and needs an organizing system to keep pace with emergent events and circumstances. Within the Curandi Model, self-organizing healthcare networks, guided by purpose, can use the complex environment in the same way sailing uses the emergence of wind to move. Like the internet, health networks can adapt to serve everyone’s specific need within a complex environment.
Distributed Innovation
The Curandi Model supports a new set of tools and methods for Healthcare Developers throughout the world to better define purpose and systems that create a better system through growth and productivity. Curandi’ s innovation network provides a platform for Developers to learn and build.
